Air Guitarists: The Nerd/Stud Missing Link
Nothing says “stud” like taking center stage and shredding feverishly through a boot-stomping lick as 50,000 fans extend their tongues and throw devil’s horns your way. Nothing screams “nerd” louder than gathering in convention halls dressed in outlandish costumes and pretending to be a stud. Where the unstoppable force of ax-wielding stud meets the immovable object of convention nerd lives the Air Guitarist.
It is difficult not to admire the seriousness with which the premiere air guitarist organization, US Air Guitar, takes itself, teetering on the border of self-mockery but never EVER crossing the line. Check out the Hall of Fame - the “Dream Team” of Air Guitar Champions - and you probably won’t think: “I bet they were REALLY popular in high school.” But follow the links to the video footage of each one performing, and you will realize: “These people have skills!”
The U.S. Finals are in New York City on August 16, 2007. The NYC winner is off to Oulu, Finland for the Air Guitar World Championships, presumably to meet and compete with stud/nerds from around the globe.
It is unclear what happens after a king is crowned in Finland. Perhaps the victor is beamed to an Inter-Galactic Air Battle on or around the planet Romulus. Vulcans suck! Romulans Rule! Air Guitarists forever!

That’s funny! I wonder how many of those folks are actually guitar players. That’s one of the perks of playing guitar, that you can do a pretty good air guitar. I know I’ve impressed enough folks at parties doing air guitar. Yup. Proud of it.
